Why a Venogram May Be Recommended
Your provider may suggest a venogram if you’re experiencing symptoms like leg swelling, pain, or visible varicose veins. This minimally invasive imaging test helps visualize the veins, making it easier to detect conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), vein malformations, or blockages. Understanding the structure and function of your veins is crucial in determining the right course of treatment.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your venogram, you’ll receive specific instructions from your care team. These may include avoiding food or drink for a set period before the test. Be sure to inform your provider about any medications you’re taking or allergies you have, especially to contrast dye or iodine. You’ll also want to wear comfortable clothing and arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.
What Happens During the Procedure
The venogram is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. You’ll lie on an exam table while a contrast dye is injected into a vein—usually in your foot or leg. As the dye moves through your veins, X-ray images are taken in real time to track blood flow and identify any abnormalities. You may feel slight pressure or warmth during the injection, but most patients tolerate the procedure well.
After the Venogram
Once the imaging is complete, your provider will monitor you for a short period before you’re allowed to go home. Mild soreness or bruising at the injection site is common, but serious side effects are rare. Your care team will review the results with you during a follow-up visit and explain any findings, next steps, or treatments that may be needed based on the outcome.
